India is fighting battle with Corona ,terrorist, and from disputes with its neighboring countries like China and Nepal. And in this period of corona pandemic, a new enemy has arrived named Locust, which is a matter of concern among farmers of different states of our country.
These locusts live and breed in semi arid or desert areas. They belong to the family of grasshoppers . They are called desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria). Their main breeding areas are the Horn of Africa ,Yemen, Oman, Iran and Pakistan.
Locusts till now have damaged crops and trees in five states, namely-Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The centre has issued warning to 12 states including Bihar, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand , which are on high alert .
Locusts are now moving in other states in search for food . These are now in immature states and need food for their development . For them green vegetation is most favourable for their growth in the stages between nymph to moth. Good rain is favourable condition for hopper's development. And once they are mature, they will slow down their movement for breeding.
When in large population, their behaviour changes and they start forming SWARM,i.e they transform from 'solitary phase' into 'gregarious phase'. In one square km, a single swarm contains up to 40-80 million adult locusts. They can travel up to 150 km per day. These Locusts are Passive flyers and fly with the direction of winds .And this year has been favourable for these Locusts. Their move to north-eastern states is because of moist condition due to the westerly winds lead by the cyclone AMPHAN. Once they reach their mature state ,they will again move towards westward direction ,towards Rajasthan to lay their eggs and also due to movement of monsoon.
Their westward movement will be more destructive because now the season of sowing KHARIF crops will start. And if these locusts continue to grow rapidly, these will lead to more damage to farmers who were already facing challenges due to the corona virus.
These locusts can be controlled by chemicals like lambdacyhalathirn, fiprovil, malathion, etc. along with the use of special mounted guns, spraying vehicles and spraying equipments . The insecticides that can be used are organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, and synthetic pyrethroids.
Thus, the biggest challenge for the farmers right now is to control these locusts before they start destroying their kharif crops.
